On the way home –

As I write this, Summer is coming to an end in the Northern Hemisphere and for most of the folks on PULSE here in Nigeria will or have already begun their mid-trips home. This time reminds me of the song ‘On the Way Home’ by John Mayer.  A few years ago I got to see him in concert with my son and a few of his friends.  The concert was a great way to end the summer and celebrate all the things accomplished and to look forward to the future.

This is an open letter to all my fellow PULSE volunteers as they begin a mid-assignment trip home. I am sure there have been times you may feel down, not sure if you made the right decision, and/or question your assignments.  I know I question it all the time.  It’s good to question – you get to think about things you might not have otherwise considered.  We have been positive in our posts and have a network of friends that we rely on to get us through those most difficult days that our co-workers, family and friends don’t necessarily see.  We are not alone – we have each other and I thank you for being there for me.

You have given up much to volunteer and I want those that feel they may be alone on this journey that I appreciate you as a ‘co-volunteer’ and the sacrifice you and your families/friends have given for this opportunity. I love your stories and the journeys that you have taken me on over the past several weeks as we prepared and set out to ‘be the change’.

To our families and friends reading this – again thank you. We wish we could be there for those birthdays, anniversaries and other special events – this is time we and you never get back but I hope you know we are making a positive impact in the lives of those around us (even if we don’t see it at first) and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

“So as summer’s over and the time is closing, do you remember when we just got here?  The days were longer, now it’s September, just remember on the way home…..you’re never alone – it takes a little time – but you’ll be fine!”

Happy Travels to those around the Globe getting ready for that trip home – and if your break is a little further on down the line like me, we are here for one another. Enjoy the visits and come back as energized and excited as you were when this adventure began.  I want to continue to hear your story and be part of your journey!
