The place where magic happens

The first two weeks have quickly passed.   I’m getting used to the life in Ireland and getting better understanding on how the camp works here.  In this blog post, I’m going to tell you more about Barretstown.

Barretstown offers free, specially designed camps for children and their families living with a serious illness – supported by 24-hour on site medical and nursing care. We run the camps in spring (Feb – May), summer (Jun – Aug) and autumn (Sep – Nov), almost every week which means around 10 sessions for each season.  Spring and autumn camps are mainly the Family Camp, which offers the whole family to spend 3-4 days and experience various activities.  The summer camps are programmes for the children from various countries in Europe. They spend a bit longer than family camp, for 8-9 days being away from their parents, have some fun, meet and befriend other campers.

At the camp, the children take part in various activities such as archery, horse riding, canoeing, arts and crafts, games, climbing, etc. which they have been missed or had to give up as a result of their illness, in 100% supported environment. Through these activities, not only just to have fun but they gain confidence and self-esteem.  This is based on the model called ‘Therapeutic Recreation’.

We had the summer session 4 camp last week.  I shadowed some of the camp staff and observed how the camp is flowing. I felt so happy by looking at the campers with a smile on their faces.  There were laughs everywhere, full of energy all the time.  I couldn’t even believe they have a serious illness.   So impressed how big positive impact we are making to the campers and their families!

Here are some pics of the camp site.
