A message of Solidarity: you can make the difference!
August 24, 2016
I’m writing just now after having received sad news: tonight (at 3.36 am) a strong earthquake (6.0 magnitudes) hit some zones in center of Italy (Lazio, Umbria and Marche). There is no other way to tell you how I am feeling….
Even if I am now far by my home, I am virtually close to all my family and friends but, mainly, my mind is directed to all my countrymen involved in this tragedy.
I can not remain indifferent nor stand still watching, but surely I can express my closeness to Italians and to all humanitarian no profit and medical support providing medical assistance to my Country.
I suppose you can understand me if I have decided not to blog on Italian earthquake. In this case, only silence, solidarity and prayers.
Especially, in moments like these, I am feeling stronger touched and I want to give you a message of solidarity and support for all people involved in similar natural disasters. Sadly, this is not only one natural disaster in which I assisted in last 2 weeks here…now I am referring to the recent Peru earthquake and Louisiana flooding.
Despite this, it’s comforting me to write about Solidariety message for Louisiana emergency: in these weeks Direct Relief is actively working to fulfill urgent requests of medical supplies from Louisiana health centers and clinics, after the flooding.
The federal government declared a major disaster in the state and thousands of people are currently displaced and living in shelters. There have been 13 reported deaths from high waters and 40,000 homes have been damaged by floodwaters, according to news reports.
In response to flooding in Louisiana, Direct Relief has committed an initial $150,000 in cash for the emergency response effort in Louisiana and has made its entire $36 million medical inventory available to partner nonprofit health organizations in the affected areas.
As declared by Damon Taugher (Director US Program), you can listen to how Direct Relief works to avert Medical Emergencies among Louisiana Evacuee Population on following link:
You can know that Direct Relief is seeking donations in support of its efforts response in Louisiana by visiting Direct Relief’s donation page.
And this is not all: Direct Relief is also organizing “Volunteer event in response to Louisiana Flooding Emergency”. For this occasion, on August 23, 2016, 2,000 aid packs were prepared for local communities affected by Louisiana flood by support of volunteers.
Each volunteer gave their own personal support by filling each single pack, including essential personal care and medical materials (hygiene kits, clean-up kits and other much-needed items to help those who have been affected by the floods) inside each bag.
It was very touching for me to see an active and sensitive partecipation of families in this volunteering event and also children involved in kit preparation!
By this message, I hope I have given you a deeper reflective moment on daily great support offered by many NGO organizations, like Direct Relief, to our communities.
I believe each of us (me included) can offer their own solidarity message, partecipating in events like these; just now that Italy is in an emergency situation and needs all our collaboration and hope! Let’s send a solidarity message!
Surely, it’s really impressive seeing how we are impotent in front of similar natural disaster but we also can decide to not be passive and.. really make the difference!
<Even the smallest individual action can have a great impact on our society!>
