He will help to improve efficiency in logistics and procurement management and ensure policies and best practices are adhered to while promoting value for money services.

A Business Excellence Manager based in Colombia, Alba will be doing an assignment in the US, working with Save the Children to understand the mechanisms of sponsorship at Save the Children. Alba will review marketing communications and perform a cost-benefit analysis on ROI of implementing a Hispanic marketing strategy. These efforts are in response to a recent acquisition of a large number of Spanish speaking donors, and a targeted marketing strategy will be important to sustain donor growth with this segment of the American population in the near future.

A Communications Manager based in Australia, Alicia will be doing an assignment in Kenya, working with Amref Health Africa to develop and implement a fundraising strategy. These fundraising activities will allow for the continuation, expansion, and sustainability of AMREF Flying Doctors’ outreach activities to reduce morbidity and mortality in certain areas without compromising AFD’s financial obligations towards Amref Health Africa.

An Executive Secretary based in Egypt, Amal will be completing an assignment in Abuja, Nigeria, working with Jhpeigo.  She will help build the leadership and management skills of key officials of the Pediatric Association of Nigeria, among others.  She will also address current organizational gaps, including the development of existing organizational strategies. Through this, she will help enable Jhpiego/MCSP to help advance the overall objective of rolling out the Helping Babies Survive curriculum, and help improve newborn health in Ebonyi and Kogi States in Nigeria in the long run.

A Senior Clinical Trial Manager based in Sweden, Anki will be completing an assignment in Kenya, working with the Fistula Foundation to strengthen an internal monitoring and evaluation system for Disciples of Mercy, a grant recipient of the Fistula Foundation. By increasing the capacity of the staff through Anki’s work, DOM will be able to help increase the demand for fistula related services uptake to decrease the amount of people who have to silently suffer this highly stigmatized medical problem.

Anna Caraffi

A Global Category Manager based in the United Kingdom, Anna will be completing an assignment in Nigeria, working with the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) to provide procurement and supply chain support to ensure the sustainable procurement and distribution of maternal and neonatal health commodities and equipment in the three key Nigerian states. She will work with states to procure sufficient quantities of commodities for targeted facilities on time and also create a government-approved 2-year quantification of essential maternal and neonatal commodities with a clear supply and procurement plan. This will contribute to CHAI’s goal to partner with the government to drive a 40% reduction in maternal and neonatal mortality in three states by improving the quality and availability of services during birth.

Annie Scurfield

A Senior Sales Specialist based in the United States, Annie will complete her assignment in New York working with The Earth Institute’s Millennium Villages Project (MVP). She will be working with the Agribusiness sector team based in New York to help develop an online field monitoring system for agricultural extension officers in rural Africa. MVP is accelerating its business development activities as part of a project-wide push to enable rural African communities to become self-sufficient. Establishing small cooperatives is the goal to help local farmers become more efficient in agricultural production, sales and increased incomes. The community can then reinvest the increased agricultural income to maintain progress in other areas, such as education and health. The online monitoring system that Annie will develop will enable farmers’ transition from subsistence to commercialized agriculture.

Avadhesh Kumar Sharma

A Sales Executive based in India, Avadhesh will be completing an assignment in South Africa, working with Project HOPE UK to create and finalize the details of the Health Programme and help produce resources that will be offered through the soon-to-be-built Early Years Development Centre. Avadhesh will create a survey that will help Project HOPE with monitoring and evaluation. He will set up field trials and build working relationships with the local government clinic. These contributions will help provide primary and preventive health services to children in the community and help eliminate or reduce key drivers of poor health in children

Avinash Mohanty

A Product Group Manager based in India, Avinash will be completing an assignment in Nigeria, working with the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) to define interventions and strategies to address poor diagnostics, referral, and commodity availability that currently limits access to effective treatment of severe pneumonia. Specifically, Avinash will help develop a comprehensive strategy to increase treatment access for children with pneumonia, and these contributions will feed into CHAI’s overall goal to increase the access, availability, and affordability of antibiotics for treatment for non-severe cases of pneumonia in Nigeria.

A Vaccines Country Manager based in Senegal, will be completing an assignment in Rwanda, working with Partners in Health. A discussion between Andrew Witty and an official at the Ministry of Health in Rwanda led to an agreement to support the Rwandan government in developing the country’s capacity to conduct international-standard clinical trials. He will work with the Rwanda Biomedical Center-Medical Research Center (RBC-MBC) to develop training standards for medical professionals in the public health system to build their capacity to operate large clinical trials.

A Trade Strategy Pricing Manager based in Canada, Carissa will be completing an assignment in Senegal working with PATH. She will work with the PATH team, the Ministry of Health in developing a strategy for Senegal to address Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs). A Regional Market Access Manager based in Germany, Christa will be completing an assignment in Romania, working with Hospices of Hope to help the organization with fundraising initiatives. Through preparing a marketing plan, researching funding sources, networking, and applying for funding, Christa will help Hospices of Hope find sources of funding for a new center, the first of its kind in Romania, near Bucharest that will provide facilities for children with life-limiting conditions, such as cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, and other genetic and metabolic disorders.

An Associate QC Scientist based in the United States, Dara will be completing an assignment in Zambia, working with Leonard Cheshire Disability to help improve operational efficiencies. Dara will be working with the team to review various processes to improve the efficiency of their design and use, including project management tools, human resource systems, communication systems between head office and regional partners, and office management processes. Through these contributions, Dara will help the Leonard Cheshire Disability’s Southern Africa Regional office maximize its efficiency so that the team can better fulfil its potential to deliver support programmes to people with disabilities across the region.

A Strategy Planning Analysis and Project Manager based in Singapore, Elizabeth will be completing an assignment in Vietnam, working with the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) to support the Ministry of Health as long-term resources are pursued in light of the pending termination of CHAI’s HIV funding. Elizabeth will work on improving resource tracking, allocation efficiencies, resource mobilization, internal funding mobilization, and health insurance coverage expansion. The assignment aims to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the current health insurance system in addition to better raise and manage funds from donors.

A Shift Manager based in Nigeria, Ezekiel will be completing an assignment in the US, working with Direct Relief as part of a multi-year PULSE Pillar project. The goal of the project is to help Direct Relief design, develop and put into place a Quality Management System (QMS) to support continuous quality improvement while dramatically increasing the output and impact of their work. The overarching goal is to double the amount of humanitarian aid that Direct Relief can provide in a 12-month period (year 5 vs. year 0). Ezekiel will help Direct Relief to streamline and optimise the order fulfilment process for their US partners.

A Senior Scientist based in the United Kingdom, Hitesh will be completing an assignment in South Africa, working with Project HOPE UK to develop cost and staffing plans and schedules for the first two years of the soon-to-be-built Early Years Development Centre. Hitesh will write the Health Programme for the Centre and develop concrete technical plans, training schedules, risk assessments and technical resources for implementation, and participating in the production of appropriate materials that will be offered through the EYDC as well as in the community by volunteers. The implementation plan and training schedule will help to guarantee consistent improvements to child health in the township and will help provide primary and preventive health services to children in the community.

A Supply Manager based in the United Kingdom, Jim will be completing an assignment in Kenya, working with Save the Children to directly support the GSK-Save the Children partnership signature programme in Bungoma County in Kenya on an assignment that follows the work of a 2014 Volunteer. The 2014 volunteer conducted a gap analysis for procurement and supply of medicines, medical supplies and equipment, designed and started implementing a proposed plan. Jim will continue with the implementation of this plan.

A Director of Pathology based in the United States, Kendall will be completing an assignment in Ghana working with The Earth Institute’s Tropical Lab Initiative (TLI). TLI is designed to make diagnostics more readily available to patients in rural and remote areas in Africa. Kendall will help with the integration of the Tropical Lab within the already existing public health structures in place, linking it to the local Health Center and District Hospital.  He will also help with capacity building for health professionals and managers in the use of new tools and overall improvement and strengthening of the health system.

A Director – Development Projects based in the United Kingdom, Rachel will be completing an assignment in the UK, working with Save the Children. Rachel will continue the work of 4 previous PULSE volunteers to support the development and implementation of an M&E framework which tracks the progress of the GSK-Save the Children partnership. A key positive change for this year is that a permanent Save employee will be responsible for the M&E framework on an ongoing basis and Rachel will support them on specific projects.

Raffaella Addis

A Communications Manager based in the United Kingdom, Raffaella will be completing an assignment in the UK, working with Target Ovarian Cancer to increase awareness of resources and support for ovarian cancer. Raffaella will be helping to promote general practitioner educational tools for earlier diagnosis of ovarian cancer and increase referrals to Target Ovarian Cancer’s many support services. These contributions to increase awareness of support and information will target late diagnosis, one of the major causes of low survival in ovarian cancer.

Ravi will coordinate the implementation of the BAP Program from the Mbarara location in Uganda. The project will bridge the gender gap facilitating preventive health measures through adolescent health centers, social and emotional learning curriculum, and conduct group education and community outreach & mobilization.

Robyn Widenmaier

A Scientific Advisor based in Canada, Robyn will be completing an assignment in Canada working with the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS). She will develop a comprehensive research impact assessment plan for the Canadian Cancer Society’s Research Institute (CCSRI). For the last 6 years, CCS has been growing its research monitoring and evaluation program. They have established a systematic monitoring program to assess all of programs, and established strong metrics of evaluation. Within that time, they have also completely redesigned our entire research portfolio. With the current evaluation program as a foundation, it is an ideal time for the development of a comprehensive research impact assessment plan for the that will allow CCSRI to leverage the information and tools that we have already created, to set benchmarks and assess the long term outcomes and changes within our portfolio, as well as the impact of our research program redesign.

Although KSWA has been around for 86 years, it does not have a consistent message across all of its communications, so Sanjeev’s work will help the KSWA establish a more unified brand.

Sharvari Bhatt

A Microbiologist Specialist based in the United States, Sharvari will be completing an assignment in Nigeria, working with the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) to provide procurement and supply chain support to ensure the sustainable procurement and distribution of maternal and neonatal health commodities and equipment in the three key Nigerian states. She will work with states to procure sufficient quantities of commodities for targeted facilities on time and also create a government-approved 2-year quantification of essential maternal and neonatal commodities with a clear supply and procurement plan. This will contribute to CHAI’s goal to partner with the government to drive a 40% reduction in maternal and neonatal mortality in three states by improving the quality and availability of services during birth.

A Global Brand Director based in the United Kingdom, Simona will be completing an assignment in Cambodia working with CARE International to provide regional comms support for 4 countries (Nepal, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar) on the 20% Reinvestment Initiative.  As CARE and GSK finish their 3-year projects in 2015 and enter a new phase of partnership (2015-2020), there is a an on-going need to generate new knowledge and capture best practices and approaches (using existing project data and case studies).  Simona will support each of the project countries to develop CARE-GSK partnership communications/advocacy action plan for the next 3 years that will specify communication efforts that will not only help to raise visibility of this partnership, but also contribute to improvement of project delivery effectiveness and promote regional learning through sharing of best practice.

Stephen will work with the Math & Science Coalition which is aimed at filling the gap in STEM education outcomes in Philadelphia. He will guide the newly formed Advisory Board (at the Coalition) in the next phase of work – to help design strategies, recruit new partners and create structures to advance their own strategic interests, in addition to advancing those of the Coalition and the City of Philadelphia.

Sule Kulein

A Senior CRA based in Turkey, Sule will spend 1 month in NY and 5 months in Ghana with The Earth Institute’s 1 Million Community Helathcare Worker (1MCHW) program.  1MCHW has the goal to have 1 million community health workers (CHWs) supporting the rollout of health systems throughout Sub Saharan Africa. CHWs play a critical role in helping marginalized populations attain basic healthcare services, especially in remote and hard-to-access areas. Sule will help bring the 1MCHW Campaign efforts to scale in Ghana. The Millennium Villages Project (MVP) has already introduced a cadre of CHWs to its field location in Bonsaaso, Ghana. Now the Campaign seeks to scale the work of the MVP to the entire Amansie West district in Ghana. Sule will oversee the operations and rollout of this project.

Sylvia Estel

A Shopper Marketing Manager based in Germany, Sylvia will be completing an assignment in Vietnam working with the PATH. She will particularly work with the PATH Vietnam Healthy Markets Initiative to support the Government of Vietnam in developing a locally financed HIV response. Until recently, 80% of HIV prevention care and treatment in Vietnam has been funded through external donors. HIV commodities and services were mostly free or highly subsidized even when populations were willing to pay. While Vietnam has been very successful in reducing new infections and expanding access to care and treatment, as it has entered middle income status, externals funds have and are reducing dramatically. Healthy Markets aims to establish a viable commercial market for condoms, lubricant, needles and syringes and private HIV services.
