The PULSE of my territory

Thank you for joining my very first blog. I am looking forward to sharing my experiences as a GSK PULSE volunteer with you.  I am so honored to be a part of a program that allows me to give back to the community.

I have spent the majority of my GSK career in Philadelphia and it was important to me to do my PULSE assignment in this community. When I first got Philadelphia as my territory, I remember being horrified at all the suffering I would see on a daily basis but soon homelessness, poverty and drug abuse became a normal part of my work day. After awhile it felt as though  I became immune to peoples’ suffering as I drove past them on my way to the next physicians’ office. Now as PULSE volunteer, I will have the opportunity to make a difference.

I am ecstatic to be working for Prevention Point Philadelphia (PPP) as a PULSE volunteer.  PPP is a multi-service public health organization dedicated to reducing the harm associated with drug use and sex work. Using a harm reduction strategy, PPP, is one of two agencies in the Pennsylvania (the others is in Pittsburg) targeting these populations. The agency uses a harm reduction philosophy to provide health and social services in a non-judgmental, culturally sensitive manner to over 6,100 people a year.

In the basement of a nondescript building on Lehigh Avenue with a very teeny tiny budget PPP provides the following:

  • Wound care
  • Primary Care
  • Vaccines
  • Family Planning and STD screening
  • Street Side Health

  • Social service referrals
  • Case Management
  • Education Programs
  • HIV risk counseling
  • Free HIV/ HEP C Testing

    • Clean injection supplies
    • Free safe disposal of needles
    • Wound care kits
    • Counseling resources
    • Mobile exchange sites

It is amazing that an agency that has a staff of less than 15 people can offer so many services. I am so excited to be a part of their team during my assignment and am looking forward to sharing my experience with all of you.

  1. That is amazing work, so proud of you for staying in Philadelphia. You are living proof of our city’s motto of brotherly love. God bless you and your work!

  2. Good luck Dawn. I know you were very excited about this placement. I am sure you will be a rock star.

  3. I am so very proud of you! It doesn’t surprise me at all that you’d be involved with such a worthy cause! You are an amazing individual with such a warm heart…PPP is blessed to have you on their team! Congratulations again on your assignment and I look forward to hearing all about your experience!
